Christmastime in Iowa

Long story short: I went to Iowa for the national championship and we lost in the quarterfinals.

Long story NOT short:
I left from school at 9am Saturday morning and got to Iowa later on Saturday. Sunday and Monday were fun. On Sunday we held a volleyball clinic on three of the practice courts at the events center where we played. It was for 3rd-5th graders and it was so much fun! Most of the girls were really cute but some just didn't want to be there. One girl even yelled at Mel, it was super funny. Then on Monday we went to Hunt Elementary School and put on an assembly for the ENTIRE school. Luckily it was a pretty small school but there were still a lot of kids to entertain for at least a half-hour. We talked about staying healthy, working hard in school, and being a good teammate! They all had little actions that went with them. Staying healthy was flexing, working hard in school was tapping your head like you were thinking hard, and being a good teammate was turning to the person next to you and giving them a high-five!

Tuesday we began pool play. Tuesday we played Morningside. They are the hosting team and they are from Iowa. They were ranked ahead of us so no one expected us to win. But we won! It was a great game. Did I mention that one of our girls had gotten the 24 hour stomach flu and couldn't play?

Wednesday was the second day of pool play. Sadly, we lost to Fresno Pacific University. They are reigning national champs AND they are undefeated. Their record is something like 40-0. But we did win one game out of four against them, which is awesome because they normally beat everyone in three easy games. But seriously, all of the scores were close. I still think we could have beaten them. Oh, and did I mention that one of our starting outside hitters had the 24 hour stomach flu and couldn't play? Instead one of the backrow specialists (a freshman) played outside hitter. She hasn't played outside hitter this entire year.

Thursday was the last pool play game of the tournament. We played Black Hills State University and beat them in five. It was a LONG and tiring game. I felt like my legs were about to fall off. Oh, and two of our girls (our other senior outside hitter and main setter) were recovering from a weaker version of the stomach flu. Gross!

Friday started early and it was now SINGLE ELIMINATION BABY! The first game was against Vanguard University. Sorry if you ever read this Shiloh but we beat them down! Oh snap! And now our other setter and our main right side hitter were suffering from the stomach flu. When they rotated off the court they were throwing up on the sidelines. Again, ugh.

Much later that day (at 8:15pm to be exact) the second game of the day started. This was the quarterfinals! We played Concordia... and lost in three. Dang. Our setter and right side hitter were still throwing up on the sidelines. And that was the end of the season. And guess where the team finished? Tied for 5th in the NATION in the NAIA. Not too shabby.
Pictures aren't up on the website yet. Too bad.

What comes next you ask? One more week of school, two finals, and then it's CHRISTMAS BREAK TIME!!!! Am I excited? You better believe it.
