Open Doors

I have finally had the college experience that every college student should experience. Yes. At 8:32am on Friday, February 8, 2008 my anatomy lecture was canceled. Let me tell you, I yelled "WOOT!" at least 3 times in my head. It was a great feeling and now I am here writing this post after I looked up my exam schedule so I could write it on my amazing Grey's calendar. So here's the final list:
May 5th
-A&P @ 8am
May 6th
-Old Testament @ 6pm
May 7th
-Composition @ 10:30 am
May 8th
-None
May 9th
-Human Dev. @ 10:30am
-Sociology @ 1pm

Oh boy. Just looking at my schedule makes me amazed. This year has gone by so fast. There have been so many ups and downs. Right now would have to be an UP though! :) And apparently today is Pastor's Day here at Loma. I'm expecting to see a bunch of pastors filling up the Brown chapel today.
More coming about Foreman and the AMAZING shooting star Amy and I witnessed.

You've been watching me
Like the moon watches the sky
Pushing me to find
You open doors, you open doors
It's hard to make believe
When the sun slips out of view
And I don't care what they say
I'm in love with you, so in love with you

There's a Calm I Can't Explain

At the risk of becoming a dead friend (Jaws music plays) I am finally posting again. I really do apologize about my lack of posting. I know how disappointing it is to check someone's blog only to have it be the same freaking post from ages ago. It's a terrible feeling.
So tonight was open dorm! Most of you are probably laughing. Please do. Personally I find the rules of open dorm to be hysterical. And you do want to hear them.
1. Keep the door open at all times.
2. The overhead light must be on at all times unless watching a movie, then a small lamp (that can still illuminate all against-the-covenant-actions) will suffice.
3. Both feet must be on the ground at all times.
Pretty sure there are more but I can't think of them right now. Laughing at these rules is fine. I laugh, but I really like this "open dorm" thing we have. Well, I like the fact that there are only certain times when guys can be in our hall.
There are multiple reasons why it is such a good thing! The first is that I don't have to worry about running into some poor guy when I'm going to the shower with only my towel and flip-flops on. It's uncomfortable; trust me it happened one time when I didn't know it was open dorm. I promise I really didn't. I also don't have to worry about other clothing issues, etc because I know that it's not important in a dorm full of girls. My room doesn't have to be clean all the time. Period. And the last reason I'm going to mention involves room wars. Allyse and I were in a room war not too long ago. Luckily, only Allyse was really involved in it; meaning she locked two guys out of their room (with help from Kelsey), "destroyed" their room in a creative way, and left. In return she had her closet locked shut. And Kelsey had her closet locked shut with her comforter inside. :) Good times, good times.
Anyways, tonight was open dorm for my hall. Good old Klassen hall. It's the best hall in case you were wondering. Some people came over and we (me, Allyse, Peter, Andrew, Candyce, Nick, and Sarah) watched a bit of a movie, then we got bored and played Apples to Apples. I mostly lost... but I won the last game. Which, as we all know, is the only one that counts!

Chika chika yeaah...

Congrats y'all for making it into the new year! You can now add another year to your inventory (hopefully a good year) and enter into 2008! Make it a great year! Everyone talks a lot of crap on new years resolutions (including me) but it's really not a bad thing. It is waaay too hyped up, but it is as good a time as any to reflect on your life and where it's going. If your reflections happen only once a year... then that's probably not a very good situation.
Here's some of my thoughts as we continue in our new year.
Faith. My faith to be exact. :) The last couple months of last year, now that I look back on them, seem to be where I started getting a little distant with God. How did that happen? It was like a sound wave (not physics! anything but physics!) where I kept going back and forth. Close, far, close, far... etc. A few weeks ago I picked up my Bible, wiped away a layer of dust, and began to read. I continued to read up till now and I'm gonna keep it going. God's word is so important in my walk.
Volleyball... there's a thick layer of dust on that. My last team practice was in November. :o
I've only had two days of classes (and I still have a Bible class tonight) so I'm not really sure about how the semester is going to turn out. My anatomy teacher is from England so he has a great accent, but he's also a bit weird. He paces back and forth in the front, and when he gets really into it he does this little squat thing and moves his hands in circles (doing the motions for some chemical reaction) and looks at his hand while his eyes get really big. Yeah. Very fun to watch. My sociology teacher is very direct on the verge of being rude (kinda like my Grams so I'm used to it) and my human development teacher is nice but expects a lot of effort. Bible teacher... I haven't met her yet but my composition teacher is very nice. All in all it's really not bad. And I have no school on Thursdays so my very busy Mondays and Wednesdays will be worth it. :)
Health-wise I believe I am fine. Before I came home I was having some shortness of breath and sometimes I would kinda lose my balance when I was standing... but I went to the doctors and they said it's probably nothing. I am now on Claritin-D (yeaah I'm Claritin clear :) So I guess you can make fun of me because I am now "medicated".
On the subject of guys... I'm a stereotypical woman (I hate admitting to a stereotype) and I don't know how I feel. Luckily I am still a good driver so at least all the stereotypes aren't true!

And I reorganized my desk shelves/desk! It looks pretty sweet and I couldn't resist taking a picture.

I've started my re-watch of Grey's seasons 1&2 before I break the plastic on season 3!! Wooo! It's ok, intense jealousy is a normal reaction. :)

"So this line... is it imaginary or do I need to get you a marker?"
;) EXCELLENT scene

Rest in Peace <3

This post is dedicated to Walt Vlasschaert. Walt passed away December 30, 2007. He was like a grandpa to me and would always greet everyone with a big smile and a bigger hug. It's especially sad for his family but as Walt said, he had lived a long full life and he was ready to go. He knew where he was going.

PLNU Halftime Show

Earlier in the year Loma had a powderpuff football game (girls football) where they put the freshman and sophomores against the juniors and seniors. The game itself was actually really good but the halftime show was the best because there was a guy cheerleading squad that was actually LEGIT! You should watch this video... it's a slow start but it's hysterical. Seriously.
P.S. I didn't film this I found it on youtube. The guys in pink are freshman or sophomores and the guys in black are juniors and seniors.

It's business time...

Wow... finals are almost half over to me. I had my chem final Monday morning and then I have anatomy tomorrow morning and then psychology Friday morning. I love how my exams are spaced out but it also stinks because that means I go home later when I could have gone home Tuesday. But oh well... all in all it's not bad.
This is going to be really short because I need to study for anatomy. I have a voice recorder and I am going to record myself saying some notes into it and then play it while I sleep. Weird? Yes. But I wonder if it will work. :)
So my friend Janae (who lives 2 doors down) made me listen to this song yesterday called Business Time by Flight of the Concords. It's sooooo weird... but it's also really funny. You can listen here The chorus on youtube is a little annoying, it sounds better on itunes but youtube is better than nothing right? Human tetris on youtube is also really funny. :)

Good luck to all on finals! If you've already had all your finals... darn you but I hope you did well.
Good night!

Makes me cry every time...

NEWSONG
The Christmas Shoes

It was almost Christmas time, there I stood in another line
Tryin' to buy that last gift or two, not really in the Christmas mood
Standing right in front of me was a little boy waiting anxiously
Pacing 'round like little boys do
And in his hands he held a pair of shoes

His clothes were worn and old, he was dirty from head to toe
And when it came his time to pay
I couldn't believe what I heard him say

Chorus:
Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my Mama, please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir, Daddy says there's not much time
You see she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes would make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful if Mama meets Jesus tonight

He counted pennies for what seemed like years
Then the cashier said, "Son, there's not enough here"
He searched his pockets frantically
Then he turned and he looked at me
He said Mama made Christmas good at our house
Though most years she just did without
Tell me Sir, what am I going to do,
Somehow I've got to buy her these Christmas shoes

So I laid the money down, I just had to help him out
I'll never forget the look on his face when he said
Mama's gonna look so great

Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my Mama, please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir, Daddy says there's not much time
You see she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes would make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful if Mama meets Jesus tonight

Bridge:
I knew I'd caught a glimpse of heaven's love
As he thanked me and ran out
I knew that God had sent that little boy
To remind me just what Christmas is all about

So I've got this feeling...

this lovin' feelin'. Hahaha no I'm just kidding. I actually almost feel like I'm back in senior year at the very end when I didn't want to do any work at all. And I felt burnt out. Luckily I don't feel really burnt out, I just don't want to do any work! I'm getting so lazy! And it's worse than high school because I actually have a lot of time to be lazy now that volleyball is over. I start at 8:30 most mornings and I'm done by 1:20 on T-W-F. On Monday I'm done at 12 and Thursdays just suck. But I'm having major post-Thanksgiving-itis. Maybe all that tryptophan is stuck in my system in large quantities. So I'm trying step it up and finish strong.
My exam schedule is pretty nice. I wish I were done on Tuesday (which could have been a reality) but as it is I have an exam on M-W-F. Nothing on Tuesday or Thursday. So I can't really complain. And I won't! :)
As we start to make plans to see each other over Christmas break I am getting increasingly excited. I really can't wait to see you all. Be prepared for some of the biggest, most awkward hugs of your life. Be ready.
Here's something I learned in anatomy today. A lot of times when someone has a spinal injury i.e. a football player who got tackled by the Hulk, they are paralyzed. Doctors tell the patient that they don't know if the paralysis is temporary or permanent. They have to say this. When a spinal cord injury occurs that means that a lot of spinal cells are now dead, meaning they have ruptured and spilled potassium (K+) into the body. Until the body cleans up all the excess potassium there can be no action potential in the cells and therefore no movement. So the doctors have to wait for your body to clean up before they can accurately tell if someone is going to be permanently paralyzed. Isn't that cool????

It has to be said...

Happy Thanksgiving!!!!!

I hope you are all having a fun, happy, lovely Thanksgiving. Remember, it is a day (among many) to give thanks.

No parkin' baby...

Holy moly, the past couple of weeks have been so crazy!! There has been so much going on! And I have an 8-10 page paper due on Wednesday and I have my muscle practical (where I'm responsible for knowing almost every muscle in the human body) on Tuesday. Oh yes. Fun stuff, right?
Volleyball season is also almost over. We have what could possibly be our last game of the season on Tuesday against Concordia at Concordia. We had our last home game on Saturday so it was also the day that we recognized all of the seniors on the team. I was crying and I'm only a freshman so I haven't even known these seniors for a whole year. But if you met any of them you would love them. But anyways... you have no idea who those people are so this must be intensely boring for you. :)
Has anyone else registered for their classes yet?? It was one of the most stressful things ever. I was freaking out! I had a really late registration time so what seemed like a million other freshman were able to steal that classes I wanted away from me. So I checked the classes that I wanted about a half hour before my registration time begins only to find that all of the classes I wanted were taken, the other classes were filling up fast, and that had to rearrange my entire schedule in a half hour and try to make it work while also managing to steer clear of all the professors that I knew I didn't want thanks to ratemyprofessor.com. So I was late to small group (my leader was completely fine with it, she told a tale of her own horror stories) and I registered in the beginning of my chemistry lab. Seriously, some of the people here are pretty cool. And I'm sure that there are many people at your college who are pretty cool. It's just an awesome world that God has made!!!
I had a point when I started this post but I think I lost it when I started randomly bustin out some dance moves to my iTunes. Riiiiiiight. But at least I'm not in danger of being a dead friend!
Happy Sunday everyone and have an incredible week!!!!

... no parkin' on the dance floor!

Fiiyuh!

SO currently there are over 10 wildfires blazing crazily in the San Diego County. At least 3 of them are out of control. It's super scary to see them, Candyce and I watched CNN and saw the fire in Irvine. It's really horrible because over 90 no 112 nope 150+ members of faculty and staff have been affected by the evacuations and I know for a fact that some students here have already lost their house. We don't have classes tomorrow, but it's hard to enjoy when I know that so many people are suffering.

Please pray for everyone affected by the fire!

Problems and Pain

Not my problems or pains... but this is an excerpt from what we have been reading in psychology class. It's pretty awesome.

"Life is difficult.
This is a great truth, one of the greatest truths. It is a great truth because once we truly see this truth, we transcend it. Once we truly know that life is difficult- once we truly understand and accept it- then life is no longer difficult. Because once it is accepted, the fact that life is difficult no longer matters.
Most do not fully see this truth that life is difficult. Instead they moan more or less incessantly, noisily or subtly, about the enormity of their problems, their burdens, and their difficulties as if life were generally easy, as if life should be easy. They voice their belief, noisily or subtly, that their difficulties represent a unique kind of affliction that should not be and that has somehow been especially visited upon them, or else upon their families, their tribe, their class, their nation, their race or even their species, and not upon others. I know about this moaning because I have done my share.
Life is a series of problems. Do we want to moan about them or solve them? Do we want to teach our children to solve them?"
The Road Less Traveled 9 (pg 15) by M. Scott Peck, M.D.

I like it. But yeah, I've definitely been there before. But tackling your problem head on (with God's guidance of course and some friend talk-age) seems to be the best way to go.
And I'm listening to some Grey's Anatomy songs. They are BOMB.COM!!!!!!

Life in SD

So I don't want to become a dead friend so here's a funny Will Ferrell video. Skip ahead to about 7:27... that's the funny Spartan skit. I don't know what the beginning skit is.

I do have things to say but I don't have time for a long update. So just know that I miss you all and I hope you are having fun!

You might want to rethink that Dungeon and Dragon club. You might turn into this guy... :P

SATURDAY

Well this short week is finally over. It was only a four day school week but it felt so darn long!! All of my classes seemed to drag on and on and on and on and oooooonnnn...
But it was still a surprisingly fun week.
Yesterday I had my first test. I was so freaked out!!! I totally forgot about it until WEDNESDAY so I was studying like crazy. And now after the test I have no idea how I did. The short answer section was a piece of cake but the multiple choice was a bit iffy. It could go either way...
And today is a HUGE GAME AGAINST CONCORDIA!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOT!!! I know I definitely won't play in this game but I am still so so so excited!!! They are #2 in our division and we are now ranked #6. Our coach said that we are now rated higher than we have been for the past six years. It's awesome. Volleyball is going pretty well. Yesterday was a rough day for me, one of those days where you are just off and it's hard to figure out why. But I have gotten some playing time so I'm not complaining. When we played Hope I played libero for the entire match and I also played against Madonna (a freaking huge team). So at least I get some playing time.
And my parents, Luke, Livi, Tay, my Grammy, and Kevin are all coming down to SD for the match today. That's going to be a lot of fun. The match starts at 3pm... pretty soon!
The past couple of weeks have been rough being away from home and all of you guys... but I think I'm really settling in here. And I'm praying for all of you that everything is going well for all of you. :)

Time

I cannot believe how fast time can seem to go. So much of the day is spent studying. But don't worry, you can usually fit in a nice movie if you want a break. Or go running or something.
I don't really have time to do a nice long post right now since I have to study some more for anatomy but I was really proud of this. We had a tournament in Salt Lake City on Friday and Saturday and I got to play. The school's photographer was there taking pictures and I was on the school's website!! So I'm excited about that and I wanted to tell you guys. I already told my Mom and Dad. :) It was labeled "Jillian Doornbos with a perfect pass."

And a couple of the girls on my hall are already in the nursing program (they are sophomores) and they have had some really good advice. They came around tonight and wanted to practice doing an examination on me and Candyce. It was cool!
I miss you all.

Well... I did promise some pictures. AND I have some!

Well... classes are going pretty good so far. I have some hard classes, some hard teachers, and some easy classes and easy teachers. I feel like I've been at Loma for months. But I was really really overwhelmed the first and second day. It just felt like everything was crashing down on me, especially since I had to get the assignments I will miss on Thurs. and Fri. But all in all... it's not bad at all.
And for all you Calvin girls... its only like 4 months till Christmas!!!
Love you all.

Official Move-In Day

After Kevin, Sarah, Dan, and Kristen departed (THANKS YOU GUYS FOR COMING TO SEE ME! :) I found myself to be inexplicably sad. I felt like crying... but I have no idea why I was sad. So I popped in my "Feel Good" CD by Dan Kim. The music was very good Dan. I enjoyed it a lot. But somehow, I felt a little bit sadder as I was listening. But by the end of the CD I was back to feeling good. So I guess it really is the "Feel Good" CD. Sweeeeet.
So today I helped people move in, went to my own check-in and got my sweet photo id taken, and picked up my books. They were over 5oo bucks. Used books. And I still have to get 2 more. I would encourage you all to buy your books online from a reliable source like amazon or cheapbooks. Seriously. That's what I'm going to do next semester.
Anyways I don't have much time... it's getting late and my eyes are falling closed. But I am having fun here even though I do miss you all. <3

I'm writing this from...

my dorm room in San Diego! Yep, it is way official. I'm here at Point Loma for the 07/08 school year. It feels like I'm just at camp for the week and that I will be home soon.
I can't post pictures yet since I don't have the software on my laptop yet. So I will post pictures as soon as I get that. I have to go now... see you guys later!!!!!

Switch-A-Roo

Tonight Sarah and I pulled a switch-a-too on Dan and Kevin and took THEM out on a date. We traveled to LA and proceeded to have a great time. It was pretty awesome. And I would like to add that I won a game of bowling. One out of two isn't bad if I say so myself. Happy 2 month Kevin!! :)
H-PIDDY!!
EGGPLANT!! :)
Anyways, I can't believe I am leaving on Monday. It's so darn soon!! I still haven't tested myself to see if I can run a mile in under 8 minutes! We have to be able to do that. That's a little scary to be honest. Oh dear...
Well, at a certain point in the evening I almost started crying because I suddenly realized how much I was going to miss everyone. Really guys and gals, you are the BEST. I'm having a goodbye party on Aug. 5th at my house at 3. Come.
Okay enough sad stuff. Here's some funny youTube videos. The first one is another HP rap... not as good as the first one but still funny. The second one is from Reno911. It's funnier if you watch Reno911. But still funny now.

Manic Mondays

So... this is my first post that is being written from my bed! Meaning that I am using my laptop in my bed right now to go on the internet. I love having a laptop. It's nice and little. However since I am trying to set it all up I have had to call the people in India about 3 times. In one day. That's a little embarassing but it's no big deal. As long as my computer works well I will call as many times as I need to.
So today was really really fun. I was woken up around 9am by a phone call by Debra, my counselor at PL, which was interesting. I was going to just ignore the call but then I saw the 619 area code and I couldn't ignore it. The lesson is: if you call me early in the morning and I haven't had enough sleep (at least 5 hours) I probably won't answer. Just don't be offended. I'll call you back later when my mind will actually function. There are a few exceptions to the rule. Those exceptions are my Mom, Dad, or God.
Anyways. Then....... I found out that I will need to put ALL of my songs from my iPod on my laptop manually. Lucky lucky me. You really don't want to know the details. It's not that interesting and it includes me not being very smart.
My (half)sister was over that day (and the previous night) so we talked a little bit. I worked on my songs for a long long time. And talked to a man in India for a while. It's so hard to understand the accent over the phone. He had to repeat everything twice. AND he couldn't tell me what a router looked like. Geez!
And I just found out that my registration is being blocked until I can fax in my immunization records so I had to run to my old doctor's office to sign for them. Sadly, they didn't have my MMP record so I have to find that somehow. And SOON. Otherwise bad things will happen. Obviously.
Then I saw Hairspray with Sarah for the second time. It was amazing! Even better the second time since I knew the songs much much better. It was so good. I know a lot of people will disagree for various reasons but they are all wrong. It is amazing. All the actors and actresses are awesome. :) I highly recommend it. Then we went back to Sarah's house and waited for Kevin and Dan and Wes and Kristen. They took forever. Darn them! :) We were getting antsy waiting.
We all went to youth group and played a painful game of soccer. I don't remember who won, but Dan got NAILED by the soccer ball so many times it was hilarious. He would fall to the ground in his girl pants and we would all (obviously) laugh. Good times.
Then we all went back to Sarah's house and laughed at some funny things on YouTube. And now I'm home... calling India and putting CDs on my iTunes.
Sorry this post jumps around so much. At this time my mind isn't working enough to make it into a cohesive flowing post. Have fun ladies and gents.
I LEAVE ON MONDAY SO WE BETTER ALL HANG OUT.
POOL PARTY AT MY HOUSE ON AUG. 5TH... LATER ON IN THE DAY.
SAVE THE DATE!

I'll Take You There by The Staple Singers
